1 kilogram = 2.20462 pounds (2.20462 lb, often typed as lbs), and 1 pound = 0.45359237 kilograms exactly. Type a weight and the answer appears as you type, both ways: in big numbers, in pounds and ounces, and in a plain sentence you can have read aloud.
- 1 kg = 2.2 lbAbout 2 lb 3 oz
- 3.4 kg = 7.5 lbA typical newborn, about 7 lb 8 oz
- 23 kg = 50.71 lbThe usual checked-bag limit
- 70 kg = 154.32 lbAbout 154 lb 5 oz
Quick Start: Convert Kilograms to Pounds in 3 Steps
The picture below labels every part of the converter with a number. We refer to those labels all through this guide.

- Check the direction 1. Kilograms → Pounds is on when the page opens. Tap Pounds → Kilograms to go the other way.
- Type the weight in the big box 4, or tap a quick value 2 such as Checked Bag 23 kg.
- Read your answer 5. Right below it come the same weight in pounds and ounces 6 and a plain sentence 7. Press Copy full line (or Copy answer only) 8 to paste it into a message, or Read aloud 9 to hear it.
Most visits end right there. The answer follows your typing, so there is nothing to submit. Keep reading for the extras: the named quick values, the Rounding choices in the shaded panel 3 and Reset.
Choose Kilograms or Pounds First, Then a Common Weight
Start with the two big buttons at the top 1: is the weight you have in kilograms, or in pounds? The quick values 2 follow your choice, and every tile carries the name of an everyday weight.
- Tap Pounds → Kilograms to turn pounds into kilograms. Tap Kilograms → Pounds to go back.
- Tap a quick value. In kilograms the tiles are Sugar Bag 1, Rice Bag 5, Carry-On 10, Checked Bag 23, Cement Bag 50, Adult 70 and Heavy Load 100. In pounds they are Bread Loaf 1, Flour Bag 5, Potato Bag 10, Checked Bag 50, Large Dog 100, Adult 150 and Heavy Load 200. Point at a tile and a short hint says what it stands for.
- Prefer whole pounds? The shaded box under the quick values 3 holds the Rounding choices. Tap Whole number there, or pick 1 to 4 decimals. The next section shows what each one does.
- Press Reset, the button above the quick values on the right, to start again with 1 kg to pounds and automatic rounding.
Keyboard users: S flips the direction.
Round the Answer to Whole Pounds or More Decimals
Rounding decides how many decimals the answer shows, and the weight itself stays exact. It sits in the shaded box under the quick values, and the pill filled with color is the choice that is on.

- Find the Rounding row 1. The first pill, Automatic, shows 2 decimals for most weights, like 154.32 lb, and a few more for very small ones, like 0.4409 lb.
- For a bathroom scale or a luggage tag, tap Whole number: 70 kg then reads 154 lb instead of 154.32 lb. For a recipe or a lab sheet, choose one of the decimal pills, from 1 decimal up to 4 decimals. With 1 decimal 70 kg is 154.3 lb, and with 4 decimals it is 154.3236 lb.
- Watch the answer 2. It updates the moment you choose, and the sentence under it and the copied text follow, whether you press Copy full line or Copy answer only. The pounds-and-ounces line stays in whole ounces, like “≈ 154 lb 5 oz”.
Press Reset 3 and the row goes back to Automatic. The choice is not kept between visits, so every new visit starts with Automatic.
Pounds and Ounces: Type Both at Once
In the United States a baby, a turkey or a parcel is often weighed in pounds and ounces, like 7 lb 8 oz. You do not have to work out the decimal yourself, because the converter has a separate box for the ounces.

- Tap Pounds → Kilograms 1. The quick values 2 change to pounds, and an oz box 4 appears next to the big box.
- Type the pounds in the big box 3, for example 7.
- Type the ounces in the small box 4, for example 8. Leave it empty if there are no ounces.
- Read the answer: 7 lb 8 oz is 3.4 kg, and the words 5 say “7 pounds 8 ounces is 3.4 kilograms.”
Going the other way, you get pounds and ounces for free: in the Kilograms → Pounds direction the line under the answer 6 shows the weight as pounds and ounces, such as “≈ 154 lb 5 oz” for 70 kg.
There are 16 ounces in a pound, so 7.5 lb is 7 lb 8 oz, not 7 lb 5 oz. The converter does this for you.
Your Answer in Pounds, in Pounds and Ounces, and in Words
Your answer appears in large type, and around it you get the same weight in other easy forms.

- The answer 1. For 70 kg it is 154.32 lb.
- Pounds and ounces 2: about 154 lb 5 oz, the way a US bathroom scale or doctor’s chart often says it.
- The exact factors 3: 1 kg = 2.20462 lb and 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exactly. These never change.
- 1 kg vs 1 lb 4: two bars that show a kilogram is about 2.2 times heavier than a pound.
- The sentence under the answer 7 says it all in words, like “70 kilograms is 154.32 pounds. That is about 154 pounds 5 ounces.” It helps when numbers and symbols are hard to read.
- Copy full line and Copy answer only 8: the first copies the whole line, like “70 kg = 154.32 lb”, ready to paste into a message or a document; the second copies just the answer, like “154.32 lb”, when you only need the number. Read aloud 9 reads the sentence out loud with your device’s own voice; press it again (Stop reading) to stop.
- Leave the box empty or type a letter by mistake, and the converter tells you what it needs rather than showing a wrong weight.
Tapping the box selects the old number, so the new one replaces it as you type. On a keyboard, ↑ and ↓ step the weight by 1, or by 10 with Shift held down.
See the Formula With Your Own Weight
Want to see the math? This panel shows the real formula, filled in with your own weight.

- Click ✦ How it is worked out 1 under the tool.
- Read the formula 2: for 3.4 kg, 3.4 × 2.20462262 = 7.5 lb.
- The next line 3 turns the part after the point into ounces: 0.4957 × 16 = 7.9, so about 7 lb 8 oz.
- The last line 4 is a quick estimate you can do without a calculator: double it and add 10% (3.4 × 2 = 6.8, plus 0.68 = 7.48 lb).
- Change the number or the direction and the steps update with it. In the Pounds → Kilograms direction they start by turning your ounces into pounds (8 oz ÷ 16 = 0.5 lb).
Print a kg and lb Chart for the Wall or the Gym
Need a chart for the nursery wall, a gym whiteboard or a spreadsheet? You get one for the direction you picked, with your own weight added.

- Press the Conversion table button under the converter (T on a keyboard).
- Your own weight gets its own highlighted row 2; in this picture it is 3.4 kg = 7.5 lb.
- ⇄ lb → kg 1 flips the chart so pounds come first. Copy table pastes cleanly into Excel, Google Sheets or Word, and ⬇ CSV gives you a file instead.
- Tap any row to load that weight into the converter.
Convert a Week of Weigh-Ins or a Packing List in One Go
Typing weights one by one gets old fast. If you have a week of weigh-ins, a packing list or a column from a spreadsheet, paste the lot.

- Press Convert a list under the converter, or L on a keyboard.
- Paste your weights 1, one per line. Commas, semicolons and tabs work too. In the Pounds → Kilograms direction you can write “7 lb 8 oz” or “12 oz” on a line.
- Answers 2 appear beside each line, using the direction at the top. Lines without a number show not a number.
- When you are done, Copy results 3 copies both columns, ⬇ CSV saves a file and Clear starts over. Up to 500 lines fit.
We tested the list with a real mix of entries. “7 lb 8 oz” came back as 3.4 kg, “12 oz” as 0.34 kg and “8 lb 2 oz” as 3.69 kg. One line tripped us up: “1,5” turned into two rows, 1 lb and 5 lb, because a comma separates values in the list. Write 1.5 instead.
Your Last Weights, One Tap Away
Weighing something every day? The converter keeps your recent weights on this device, so you do not have to type them again.

- The last 5 weights show as buttons 1; tap one to use it again. Up to 20 are kept in total.
- ⬇ Export CSV 2 saves the last 20 with the date and time. It is a simple way to keep a record of a baby’s weight, or your own. Whichever CSV button you press, here, in the table or in the list, a small panel near the bottom of the screen shows the save under way, then says Done! and gives the file name.
- Clear 3 empties the history.
Send a Weight to Family, Embed the Converter or Print It
New parents often need to pass a birth weight on to a lot of people at once. That is what the row of buttons under the converter is for, along with saving and printing.

- Save 1 keeps the converter in your favorites, and My Tools brings it back later. The heart icon in the header does the same.
- Share 2 opens the share window below.
- Embed 3 gives you code for a website, for example a gym page or a shipping guide.
- On your phone 4 shows a QR code that opens the converter on your phone with one scan.
- Print 5 makes a paper copy or a PDF.
- Rate the tool with the stars 6 if it helped you.

- Copy link 1 copies a link that opens the converter with your weight already in the box.
- Copy result 2 copies the line “3.4 kg = 7.5 lb” together with a link to the page, so a friend can open the same numbers.
- Or choose an app 3, for example WhatsApp, Facebook, X or email, and the family group chat is one tap away.
Shortcut Keys
On a computer, the ? key opens a list of shortcuts. Click outside the weight box first, or the keys type into it.
- S: switch between kg → lb and lb → kg. R: reset.
- T: conversion table. L: Convert a list.
- C: copies the whole line. F: add to favorites. P: print.
- / or Ctrl + K: search all tools. Esc: close a window.
Checking a Weight on Your Phone
Small screens stack the parts in one column. The named quick values wrap onto new lines and the Rounding choices wrap with them, so every one stays in view. Tapping the weight box brings up the number keypad.
Using it for a newborn’s weigh-ins? Add it to favorites, or choose “Add to Home screen” in your browser, so it is one tap away next time.
How to Convert Kilograms to Pounds
The formula is: pounds = kilograms × 2.20462262. For everyday use, × 2.2046 is plenty. Dividing by 0.45359237 gives exactly the same answer.
Four worked examples:
- A suitcase at the airport, 20 kg: 20 × 2.20462 = 44.09 lb
- A doctor’s chart that says 82 kg: 82 × 2.20462 = 180.78 lb
- A 25 kg weight plate at the gym: 25 × 2.20462 = 55.12 lb
- A weight with a decimal, 131.3 kg: 131.3 × 2.20462 = 289.47 lb
How to Convert Pounds to Kilograms
Going the other way, multiply by the exact value of a pound: kilograms = pounds × 0.45359237. Dividing by 2.20462 gives the same answer.
- A 50 lb bag of dog food: 50 × 0.45359237 = 22.68 kg
- A body weight of 180 lb: 180 × 0.45359237 = 81.65 kg
- A newborn of 8 lb 2 oz: first 2 oz ÷ 16 = 0.125 lb, so 8.125 × 0.45359237 = 3.69 kg
Or just tap Pounds → Kilograms at the top of the converter and use the oz box.
Kilograms to Pounds Without a Calculator
- kg to lb: double it and add 10%. 60 kg → 120 + 12 = 132 lb (exact: 132.28 lb). Very close for any weight.
- lb to kg: halve it, then take away 10%. 150 lb → 75 − 7.5 = 67.5 kg (exact: 68.04 kg).
- Even quicker: kg × 2.2 ≈ lb. It is off by only about half a pound for every 100 kg.
- Remember a few anchors: 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lb, 10 kg ≈ 22 lb, 23 kg ≈ 50.7 lb, 45 kg ≈ 99 lb, 100 kg ≈ 220.5 lb.

Baby Weights: Kilograms to Pounds and Ounces
Hospitals often weigh newborns in kilograms, while family and friends back home ask “how many pounds?”. This table turns common birth and checkup weights into pounds and ounces. Checkup growth charts compare the weight with the baby’s age in months. If you need that number, our Age Calculator shows a baby’s exact age in months, weeks and days from the date of birth.
| Baby’s weight | Pounds and ounces | Pounds |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5 kg | 5 lb 8 oz | 5.51 lb |
| 2.8 kg | 6 lb 3 oz | 6.17 lb |

Flying Abroad: Bags Weighed in Kilograms
Most airlines outside the United States give bag limits in kilograms. A limit of “23 kg” is 50.71 lb, just over the 50 lb most US airlines allow, so a bag that is fine at home is fine on the way back.
- Weigh your bag at home in pounds, then type the number in the Pounds → Kilograms direction to compare it with the limit on your ticket.
- Carry-on limits are often small. 7 kg is only 15.43 lb, so a laptop bag and a full carry-on can go over.
- Leave some room. Airport and home scales can differ by a pound or so; aim a little under the limit.
- The weather is in Celsius there, too. Our Celsius to Fahrenheit Converter tells you what a forecast of “24°” means before you pack.
Kilograms vs Pounds: What Is the Difference?
Both measure how heavy something is. The kilogram (kg) is the metric unit used in nearly every country and in all science. The pound (lb) is used for everyday weights in the United States. One kilogram is about 2.2 pounds, so a weight in kilograms is always the smaller number.
Since 1959 the pound has been defined by the kilogram: the United States and five other countries agreed that one pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg. That is why this converter can give an exact answer, not an estimate. The same agreement fixed the yard at exactly 0.9144 meters, which is why a mile is exactly 1.609344 km, the value our KM to Miles Converter uses.
The kilogram itself was defined by a metal cylinder kept near Paris from 1889. Since 2019 it has been defined by a constant of nature instead, so it can never drift. The pound on this page is the everyday (avoirdupois) pound of 16 ounces, not the troy pound used for gold and silver, which is lighter.
Pound and Ounce Mix-Ups to Watch For
- Reading 7.5 lb as 7 lb 5 oz. A pound has 16 ounces, not 10. 7.5 lb is 7 lb 8 oz. Use the pounds-and-ounces line under the answer.
- Multiplying when you should divide. kg → lb makes the number bigger (× 2.2); lb → kg makes it smaller (÷ 2.2). If your answer went the wrong way, check the direction at the top.
- Rounding 2.2 for big weights. 1,000 kg × 2.2 = 2,200 lb, but the exact answer is 2,204.62 lb, about 4.6 lb more.
- Forgetting the ounces. 8 lb 2 oz is not 8.2 lb. Put the 2 in the oz box instead.
- Wondering about lb and lbs. Both mean pounds. The short form is lb, from the Latin libra, and lbs is the plural many people type, as in 154 lbs. The converter writes lb, and the number is the same either way.
When People Reach for a kg to lb Converter
- New parents and grandparents turn a hospital’s kilograms into the pounds and ounces the family understands.
- Travelers check their bags against limits given in kilograms.
- People at the gym add up plates and kettlebells marked in kg.
- Patients and caregivers read a weight on a doctor’s chart or a prescription label that uses kilograms.
- Online shoppers understand the weight of products listed in kilograms. When one pack is priced per kilogram and another per pound, our Best Deal Calculator shows which one costs less.
- Readers who prefer words to numbers get the answer as a sentence, and Read aloud says it for them.
Saved History, Shared Links and the Voice
- Read aloud uses the voice built into your device or browser.
- This device remembers your recent weights and favorites. Press Clear to remove the weights.
- A shared link holds the weight and the direction, like ?v=3.4&from=kg&to=lb.
Fixes for Common Hiccups
- I cannot find the ounces box. It appears only in the Pounds → Kilograms direction. Tap that button at the top.
- “That is not a number” appears. Something other than digits is in the box. Type just the weight, like 70 or 3.4. A decimal comma (3,4) works in this box; we tried it.
- Read aloud is silent. Check mute and volume first. Some browsers come without a voice; in that case Copy full line still works.
- Too few decimals. Rounding is on a fixed choice such as Whole number. Tap Automatic in the Rounding box, or press Reset.
- The history is empty. It is kept per device and per browser, and a private window or clearing browser data wipes it.
Questions About Kilograms and Pounds
How Many Pounds Are in 1 Kilogram?
1 kg is 2.20462 lb, or about 2 pounds 3 ounces. The exact factor is 2.20462262.
